About Me

I am a senior at the University at Albany double majoring in Journalism and Women’s Studies and minoring in Sociology.  I have a passion for writing as well as a passion for research and social change.

I come from Rhinebeck, NY, a small town at the heart of New York State’s Hudson Valley, where I grew up playing field hockey and riding horses.

For the past fifteen years I have stuck with the latter, riding horses, competing, and serving as the Captain of the University at Albany Equestrian Team for three years.

During the summers I serve as the Director of The Southlands Foundation’s Summer Riding Program and Young Rider Pony Camp in which I teach children how to ride horses.

This past summer I also worked as a volunteer in an orphanage in Sing Buri, Thailand, a life-changing experience to say the least.

Upon graduation I have plans to continue my service work by traveling west as a City Year corps member, working in low-performing elementary and middle schools as a full-time tutor, mentor, and role model for students most at risk of dropping out.  After my time with City Year I hope to join the Peace Corps as a Youth & Community Development volunteer.

I love writing but I don’t write for pleasure as often as I would like to.  I spend most of my free time reading, eating cheese, listening to music, and consuming unhealthy amounts of coffee.

However, with the creation of this blog I hope to learn more about digital publishing and electronic media.  Although I maintain active Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts, I do not fully understand the capabilities and inner workings of all electronic and social media.  During the course of this semester, I hope to polish my skills as a writer and further develop my tools as a Journalist.

As a Women’s Studies major, many of my interests and passions lie within a feminist framework.  I enjoy researching and writing about feminist issues, both political and social.  I am especially interested in sexual and reproductive justice, and the ways in which classism, racism, and sexism occupy and shape our everyday lives.  Over the course of this semester, I hope to share these concepts as well as a variety of other thoughts and ideas on this blog.
